Artist of the Month - August

This month we are telling the story not of one artist - but two. Wicks & Locks is a brand designed and owned by two sisters, who not only share an entrepreneurial bloodline but also the same passion for good quality home and body products. Since launching the business, Justine and Whitney have been busy ever since with production and markets all-year round. From simmering granules, body mists, soaps, candles, scrubs and balms, this sister-duo are on a mission to differentiate themselves by using only 100% natural ingredients and environmentally-conscious packaging. 1. When did you start creating?

It all started during those long summer days when we were kids. We got creative which resulted in stealing our mum’s leftover candles, essential oils and perfumes and experiment to make our own. This turned out to be the only hobby we had in common as sisters and when we actually spent quality time together since we have very different personalities (so our mum didn’t complain ). She encouraged us more by buying DIY books for us, to learn about each ingredient and different methods to work with. We’ve  always had very sensitive skin since we were young, and we always struggled to find good quality products with reasonable prices. Therefore we used to create our own recipes with natural ingredients we could find at home and in our field and make products for ourselves.

2. How did you start the business and how did it evolve today?

The business started when Withney began making dreadlocks and candles for family and friends, hence the name ‘Wicks & Locks’. After a long period of time she felt encouraged to startup a FB page with her creations - last month they celebrated their first anniversary on 15th of August. She was getting amazing feedback and so asked my sister Justine to get on board and help expand the range of Home Fragrances and Body Products.

3. How do you manage the work/life balance?

At first it was a struggle because making handmade products from scratch is very time consuming, and dreadlocks have to go through a long process to be made. In the meantime Justine had just finished her studies so she had more time on her hands to help her start up the business. We both took the risk and decided to go with that we love doing most, so Justine quit her full-time job and they both decided to focus their energy towards Wicks & Locks. Having each other’s backs helps them keep the balance in their work and everyday life.

4. What has been your best moment so far?

We cannot say that we had a best moment because every opportunity that comes along is considered as a special moment. We really enjoy attending markets as this is where we get to meet other handmade artists and have the luxury to converse with our customers

5. What is your one piece of advice to other handmade sellers?

Believing in yourself and in your work is the key to success. Don’t underestimate yourself, and don’t be afraid to take risks and ask for help when needed. It’s never easy, but always worth it!

6. What's your favourite motto for motivation?

It’s not an actual motto but we motivate each other by singing a song from one of our favorite childhood movies 'Finding Nemo;: "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming"...
