Artist of the month - September 2018

This month we were inspired by the imagination and innovative approach to markets of Elaine Wirth from 'DecorElly', a colourful and artful small business specializing in 3D printing. Elly talks to us about her journey as she combines her creative and technological talents in a most unique way.

1. When did you start creating?

After finishing studies in 3D Design, I never figured out which path to take after that and I kept having this need to create and was searching for something to work on. My creative journey started in 2016, after reading an inspiring book titled “Creative Living”. Since I always liked bohemian style and textiles, I decided to do an online course from Etsy and learn weaving techniques and eventually started making woven wall tapestries with a hand loom. I then took this project up with my friend and we spent our time making them together.

2. How did you start the business and how did it evolve today?

Me and my friend decided to make a Facebook page called Dream Weaves and then took part at the Ethnic Market at Earth Garden. After this adventure came to an end, I decided to start working specifically on macrame developing techniques in dip-dying as it became my preferred technique. Later on I found interest in decoupage and was happy decoupaging elephant models and giving them as presents for Christmas etc. Everyone took a liking to them. I was buying the elephant models made of papier-mache and one day I decided that I want to make them from beginning to end - the whole process. So, using my knowledge of 3D design I decided to buy a 3D printer, make the elephants from scratch and then decoupage them… my very own Elephant Factory I thought to myself... Once I got the hang of using the printer, it wasn’t only Elephants that I was making. I then decided to make an Etsy shop and a Facebook page called 'Decor Elly'.

3. How do you manage the work/life balance?

I’m quite organized with my white board where I write down all the things I need to do. I leave the printer running while at work and then decoupage the model once I get back. 

4. What has been your best moment so far?

I have several, but the top one is the idea to turn my car into a shop, which has captured a lot of attention. Then there's also the joy of seeing people taking an interest in my products and the happiness of finally figuring out a perfect technique after a lot of trial and errors. Recently I had another great moment watching my creations being animated in a video.

5. What is your one piece of advice to other handmade sellers?

 Never stop exploring new options. Always keep learning and researching.

6. What's your favourite motto for motivation? 

No motto - I would just suggest the book “Creative Living” by Elizabeth Gilbert.
