Artist of the Month - December

As a final 'Artist of the Month' for 2019, we present you a lady whose passion and love for what she does, not only transpires through her creations, but also through every fibre of her being. 'Jo's Delights' started out, and is most famous for, vegan raw cakes, but her journey and will power led her to the discovery of talents for all kind of desserts, finger food, beverages, non-dairy cheeses, and Christmas specialties. Meet the beautiful and humble Jo'Anna Vella. 

When did you start creating?

In 2013, after major personal health turmoil, cutting a long story short, I went on a 100% raw vegan diet. Eventually, this led me into experimenting with raw vegan desserts to satisfy my sweet tooth. But it took me another couple of years to decide and get Jo's Delights rolling.

How did you start the business and how did it evolve today?

Officially Jo's Delights started in April 2015, as a side personal venture. In a tiny, unequipped, home kitchen. Eventually, demand for what I was doing, grew steadily. By February 2016 I quit my full-time employment to dedicate more time and energy to Jo's Delights. Proper training and certification was next. Continuous training is a must if you need to grow and evolve your profession. Unfortunately, such training is not available locally, so, I attended numerous courses and workshops abroad to be certified as a Raw Vegan Chef and Raw Vegan Patisserie. Nowadays, Jo's Delights is my full-time occupation. I still work from home but within a segregated area dedicated for food production. In 2019 we embarked on a HACCP compliance project, which required structural alterations and a complete operational overhaul, for proper food production practice and accurate record keeping. Currently we supply about twenty catering outlets, attend events with regular pop-up shops, as well as numerous individual clients via our online shop. We are also called to cater for private dining as well as small private events. 

How do you manage the work/life balance?

We can talk about balance, but not equilibrium :) it surely is not easy. Luckily, I am well supported by my husband and surrounded with beautiful people who are always very willing to help when asked. Our children are grown-ups and can manage most of their lives on their own. Regular breaks are a necessity, even though I do not regard my occupation as a job. Breaking for some quality time, not only helps you carry on with more strength and renewed vigour, but also gives room to get your creative juices going.  

What has been your best moment so far?

I cannot really single out one moment. Thankfully, I have been blessed with many beautiful events. Perhaps, the appreciation and gratitude for being allowed to do, what I love to do and earn a living every day, is a "best" moment every day. The satisfaction of returning and new customers gives me enormous courage. However, being chosen to cater for important events or tailor-made projects, is a moment of immense satisfaction. 

What is your one piece of advice to other handmade sellers?

Do what you do with love. A self-less kind of love which expects nothing in return. Just keep it simple and always push your own boundaries to do better. Never stop learning; every experience has a lesson in store.

What's your favourite motto for motivation?

"Life's what you make it!"
